08 Feb Kissing it Better
RSA Tipton Sixth Form has had the pleasure of joining charity ‘Kissing it Better’. Sixth form Health and Social Care students and staff have begun volunteering at Sandwell Hospital in which they befriend patients who have little or no one to visit them. Students have received training from the charity’s founder Jill Fraser and will also be Dementia friends. Kissing it Better’s motto of ‘creative thoughtfulness in healthcare’ allows students to enhance their understanding of individuals needs and preferences as well as building their empathic skills. These are key KASE principles that key to Tipton and RSA Central academies.
Our Students have had the privilege to talk to patients, developing their oracy and communications skills while developing their experience of health care through observing the wonderful practice of staff at Sandwell Hospital. Students thoughts on their initial experiences:
‘So far I have enjoyed Kissing it Better and meeting patients at Sandwell hospital. It promotes care and experiences, such as meeting people who may have dementia.’
‘This helps patients still feel wanted and cared for through experiences and sharing with us as visitors.’
‘Kissing it Better is an amazing organisation that inspires me to help in every way I can’.
‘it is lovely to know we could make a difference and feel they have someone to talk to’.
‘It is raising my awareness and understanding of other people, while developing my skills.’
Students have also taken time to create the gift bags that are given out to patients from Kissing it Better.
