Congratulations to two of our students who have recently volunteered at Princes Lodge Nursing home as part of their DofE. Full story below by DofE Central England
Lewis and Ethan Manns are both taking part in their Silver DofE at RSA Academy in Tipton.
Lewis and Ethan don’t have any Grandparents. Unfortunately, both of their parents lost their parents when they were young meaning Lewis and Ethan have not had much interaction with elderly people growing up. When they chose to volunteer at Princess Lodge Nursing home for their DofE Volunteering, it really took them out of their comfort zone.
Visiting the nursing home each week has really enriched the lives of the residents, particularly an elderly gentleman named Reggie. There have been times that Reggie has become very lonely and depressed, not wanting to leave his room despite the encouragement from his carers. However, after a call from Lewis and Ethan, knowing they are due to visit gives Reggie something to look forward to.
Reggie, Lewis and Ethan meet in the lounge at the home once a week to chat and play games together. There is a beautiful bond between them as Lewis and Ethan view Reggie as a Grandparent and Reggie views them as family and really looks forward to their visits each week.
Ethan says “𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲”. Lewis says “𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞.”
We asked Reggie how he feels about Ethan and Lewis’ visits and he said, “𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝟐 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦” he added “𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞”.
Well done Lewis and Ethan on taking yourself out of your comfort zones and really giving back to your community and developing such a personal experience for you both.
