Our new building

The 18 months building programme ran smoothly and our new building opened on schedule in September 2010. Students and staff are now enjoying a learning environment which is modern, light and airy and is extensively equipped with the latest in ICT. The classrooms are large, offering flexible teaching and learning spaces with smaller tutorial rooms for our Post-16 students. The building is surrounded by extensive outdoor spaces and there are rooftop spaces which can also be used for teaching and learning.

The building was officially opened on 22 November 2010 by the RSA’s President, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, KG KT, who was making a very welcome return visit. The Duke of Edinburgh completed the formalities and then spent a couple of hours visiting classrooms talking to staff and students.

In addition to this event, we have held a series of opening events. The well known chef, restaurateur and TV personality Prue Leith opened the Academy’s professional training kitchen and the designer Robin Levien (Master of the RSA’s Royal Designers for Industry Faculty) opened the technology suite. Robin also set a design challenge for 2 teams of students and this will become an annual competition.

All of the events were designed to involve as many students as possible and offer students professional opportunities related to their option subjects; so our BTEC Hospitality students catered for the events and our Media Team recorded them.
